Agarwood Assam: Panbari Reserve
Jungle: Assam
Year of distillation: 2018 in October

Beautiful beast. I didn't wear this for some long time, when I got it was still fresh in 2019. This is utterly beautiful, robust hindi from Panbari Reserve in Assam. It's meditative stuff, aging for 2 years now, I can really see the difference aging makes with this one.

At the beginning it was really bright and would punch your senses upon application, a wild punch. It now mellowed down much more, still gives me a headrush (light-headedness) when I open the cap, but the punch became a friendly fist bump. It is a fierce oud, but once you know it, you will see it's sweeter, narcotic, and friendly-wild side that will take you to the jungle in Assam. You will feel the clouds floating over the hills of the Assamese jungle, you are trekking there and the rain is pouring heavily. Luckily you have found a shelter, it's a old house amidst the jungle in Assam, you knock on the door and some foreign people open the door to invite you in.

They care for you and you are at first unsure about them, if you should trust them. Then you are amazed by their hospitality and the kindest-raw gesture they show you. They give you a cup of Assamese tea, as you take a sip and look at the heavy clouds, the rain drops, and the thick-green jungle of Assam, your mind is in ease and you are warm and relaxed. This oud is that shelter.

Feel Oud Pa-Papua

No acrobatics,
just oudy Merauke
bursting out at the seams.

Doesn’t smell like soil Merauke,
reminds me of several Filaria oils.
Maroke Sultan, Sultan’s Solace,
and Syed’s Ascent.

Oudbase
Ceylon C. ( unreleased) on left and Ceylon nirvana on the right
Both very wonderful smelling. I’m super glad to add these to my collection.
Ouddict’s watch out for the Ceylon C to be released because at its price point it’s a solid Sri!
Which one do you like better? 🙂

I also have a sample of the ASO Jamaal. Indeed this one is worthy of study it has some unusual notes

Oriscent China exclusive Hainan. A little fermented funky but in a bark mulch sense. Pleasant, a little tart but also woody... reminds me a little of the Bolisat Lao oil I used to get. Still have a bottle of that and this on hand. These oils haven't changed much in a decade or 15 years or however long it's been. The Lao is a bit older.

I just realized I may have no idea what good Cambodian oud smells like. Never in 1 million years would I think super hoi an was from anywhere but Vietnam.

As I type this I realize that of course that's a silly thing to say. Of course political barriers are meaningless to plants but really I don't think I've ever seen an oil sold as "Cambodi" that smelled like sinensis or like super hoi an. I feel like every one I have smelled has been candy like crassna scent when folks are trying to sell some thing as Cambodian. Except for a few really disgusting super fermented mistakes that I can't imagine actually wearing.

Given the experienced commentator who made this connection (Habzoud), I am certain this reflects my lack of experience. I have not widely sampled oils from Cambodia. Can anybody else chime in on this? Sinensis fragrance from Cambodia?

Top note of this oil smells to me not bloody or metallic... It is like fermented swamp notes to my nose! Then a rich "dense aged woody oily" note I smell in good oils like this and also in Malek al Malayzi. Then a smoooooothhh long dense chewy kinam tail. Makes me think of concentrated black licorice not in terms of literal scent but something... permeating sinensis glutinous sticky scent, then a long tail of the scintillating white wood note. I like the stuff so much I never wear it in pure form.

@Mr.P im sure you have more experience with Oud than me, Ive smelt a fair few "proper" Cambodis and i find them similar to this, not overall in profile but a similar vibe. Kinam rouge is a recentish oil that is from Vietnam but smells very Cambodi. I would not have guessed super hoi an to be sinensis and would have my money on crassna!
