Sandalwood oil of the day

I was looking for some 'ok' sandalwood mostly as a base for blending as a standin without breaking the bank for blends I'm working on and came across an ebay seller. Proper documentation-ish (though its likely indonesian), the kicker that made it interesting is, he's had it since 2020, but didn't think to price that in as any sort of benefit. So, new indo priced, 6 years of age on it. Not best thing ever or mysore grade, but, quite thrilled with it, will probably order some more. Creamy enough, a little bit of age, not so dear I'll cry over failed tests. Priced inline with bulkaroma sandalwood, but a better quality and no import taxes.

Oh you've ordered it? seems far too cheap, so I must assume some blend or sandaliyah surely? The rest of the tin give any details of contents?

Summers are for heavy swipes of Sandelwood oil.

Today we go with a healthy dose of Santalea1 from @AlHind Oud

It’s kinda weird because overall I am the kind of guy who is enjoying sandelwoodoils all year round but always go for Oudoils first.

But in the moment the temperatures are rising above 28°C I get insanely strong cravings for any kind of sandelwoodoils.
They are just the perfect summerscents to me, because they are not overwhelming.

Classy citrusi summer scents are too challenging especially in the opening.

Sandelwood instead delivers this smooth relaxed background scent which calms you down even on the hottest days.

Santal Royale oil Ensaroud. This is an atrociously good full throttle sandalwood oil. A beast that does not relent, and at the same time buttery woody smooth musky meaty intoxicating. It deserves the name Royale. lasts for almost 8 hours on skin. Just a tiny dab is enough to get good projection with it. Borderline animalic and if some one says it has musk in it I would believe it. This is a hidden gem. Yes it is pricey I am sure not many people like this price. But if you are getting any other stuff from Ensar ask for a sample of this oil. I am sure you will not think twice about the price after smelling it.
It is a great oil for sleep induction and relaxation.

SQ Mysore approx late 80’s early 90’s
Signature Mysore sandalwood profile, a reference oil. A complete profile giving a slightly woody opening, incredibly buttery and creamy, especially buttery, a little floral and spicy and surprisingly a little musky, I’ve smelled this musky note in Mysore before. All the notes are seamless and perfectly balanced, there isn’t a void or a break between its different facets. It’s a little quiet when applied to the skin, but once it warms up it starts projecting.

wearing a swipe of oil Margon distilled from wild Aceh sandalwood shavings (meaning the white wood with tiny bits of heartwood that are stripped away when cleaning heartwood). This material is usually not economical to distill because of the low yield but the circumstances surrounding this particular wood made it feasible. I sampled three oils extracted from the same wood, one vacuum distilled; one distilled at ambient pressure; one distilled at two bar elevated pressure. I greatly value all three of these oils, it's nice to have variations on the basic sandalwood profile.

The vacuum distilled is the most similar to a typical sandalwood oil but it still has a clear Indonesian terroir. The high-pressure distillation is rich with accessory notes, very sweet almost confectionary, very nice oil in its own way with lots of active top notes, quite different from a heartwood oil. My favorite of the three was the ambient pressure distillation, it has a little added complexity but not over blown like the two bar oil, a little bit of a smell of humid soil and forest air and a classic Indo sandalwood bouquet. None of these have particularly high santalol which I believe translates to a shorter duration on skin typically and a skewing towards strong top notes, but I'm still learning.

I've never truly enjoyed wearing sandalwood oils on their own. I’ve always found them to be either too dry or to have a linear profile, and the fact that it's such a powerful/overpowering scent is not helping. That general lack of nuance was making hard for me to perceive sandal as anything other than a beautiful "base note". Not something I could wear like oud or rose, for example.

My opinion evolved recently with some Ceylon sample from RBO... But what truly changed my mind is Ceylon Crème from @Latimah.
This oil is so smooth ! The name fits perfectly, no dryness at all, and no boring/flat citrus-heavy profile. It's also not linear, has a dynamic evolution, almost like a traditional western fragrance.
I am happy that I didn't give up with sandalwood, and found something that I can enjoy on his own.

You named it "Crème" for the gourmand aspect of it ? (like "crème de chocolat")?

I’ve been deep in making blends using sandalwood as a base and I keep on thinking of using this but I just can’t. It’s too good and I enjoy it neat. This doesn’t just have the cliché lemony citrus note. But has the scent of pear 🍐 , apple 🍏, and a slight cinnamon note. It’s so beautiful. It’s my 2nd bottle and I just don’t want to rush in finishing it. It’s that good. Literally sweet, syrupy, and creamy goodness.

Got this vacuum distilled Indo Santal Album from AHO on today and holy moly is it potent and pungent! It smells like a freshly cut piece of redmeat sandalwood. It is spicy and buttery like deeply roasted brown butter along with some fresh thyme and smoked salt. Truly mesmerizing stuff that ill have lots of fun with formulating for some attars. it will go well with the vanilla co2 i got in recently from EOA.

Applied a swipe of a sandalwood resinoid i made a while back. This is from old wood chips that had been in my collection for decades that I decided I'd better put to use. Very dark and thick like espresso, I left a little alcohol to keep it fluid, very rich complex dry aged woody top note bouquet sets this apart from other sandalwoods. Pleasant stuff would be perfect for bringing sandalwood elements into the top note stage of a perfume

last night before bed I applied a big swipe of a contemporary sandalwood oil that I got from @An Najwa a while back. Excellent price and it fully unfolds as it should - appealing woody nutty top notes and a wonderful long lasting powdery dry woody base.
