There is a flowering shrub called Daphne odors that is in the same plant family as oud and has the most amazing balanced floral scent - quite unique. At times it seems to resemble some almost rosey notes I have experienced once or twice with really good green kyara.
bitter red sweet fragrance with hints of vanilla, talcum, and apricot. Here we call it bitter laurel bay leaves bush the flowers smell nice. It is a highly toxic plant but they do sell essential oils from it and supposedly the oil isn’t toxic.
The Australian national floral emblem is Wattle, the fragrant varieties were introduced into the Mediterranean basin & the French began calling it Mimosa.

In the air, I definitely get a similarity to a sweet Kyara like tonality, it’s wonderful.
Thank you all you very much. Need to find these extracts (daphne and oleander) to experience them. Even better if I can find the plants locally. Speaking of green kyara, I could clearly smell betel leaves in Green Kyara Attar (Agar Aura). It also plays an important roles in some other compositions that I adore.

@Mousse de Chene I think you're referring to mimosa's slightly honeyed vanillic facet. In some cases, they can also have a slightly medicinal/astringent qualities.

You won’t find a daphne flower oil, and any oleander oil is likely to be a fragrance oil - I have never seen a specimen of authentic oleander essential oil for sale by any reputable vendor over the last 35 years or so

Faizal Privee - Cambodi Exquisite
Koh Kong 2023

I got this as a sample with my Nha trang ultima and immediately I wanted more! It is nice and creamy with a sweet Cambodi base. Reminds me of Kinabalu Gold from AlHind except replace the Sabah with Koh Kong. Some Cambodi ouds can be too sweet but this one isn’t.

I was curious how much a decent swipe uses up since I seem to put hardly any dent in my samples. This is 0.1ml and I've worn it a few times. See - this was a good amount to swipe on both my hands for a nice oily sheen, and yet the usage amount seems miniscule
I tell myself to not be so conservative with oud but it's hard to use up!
On the other hand I see my bottles' (with applicators) level go down...pretty sure I'm losing loads to evaporation. Doesn't seem to be an issue for samples of v-vials....

anyway, nice oil! Strangely I can't pick up either region coming off too prominently

also related to last few posts, I find myself wondering where this ouddy smell is in my garden while I'm out there reading or working out. I don't really have any plants, just a lot of tall grass and it's not any smell from oils I'm wearing - it's more of a heated/burning oud scent. I do have a labdanum bush but the flowers were only out for a while, quite a few months ago

Anointed myself with RPP's 1909 Cherrapunji Sohra

Delightful. Exquisite. Red Berries. Astringent. Leathery. Just the right amount of blue cheese funk. It could easily be a reference traditional hindi.

@RisingPhoenix When is this gem going up in the shop?
Great question - I’ve got a few really oldies I need to get up in the shop.

Maybe I need to make that a goal between now and the end of October. Tons of things collected over the years that need to get up in there 😆

Those old oils are really something else though, aren’t they!?

I agree. Daphne is one of my favourite scents, I have a pure white one growing in the front garden & it’s very beautiful. It’s a very popular plant here in Melbourne but most people grow the variety that is purple & white.

I’m amazed by the radiance of its fragrance as well. Unlike most other flowers, it’s very strong in the air & I can smell it as soon as I open the front door most winter mornings.

The pure white one in my yard had a very different scent from the red streaked plant. The white is like ylang or lily!

Sultan Hojari by Habz - codistill of Indonesian oud & frankincense. Very good stuff here. The oud is rather smoky and tempered by the lemony vibe that frankincense can give off.
Lasts a LONG time which I can't remember it doing previously. I'd cycled home (wearing gloves) over where I'd applied, and then ended up having 2 unexpected bike rides (relatively funny story**) and could still smell it after getting home and working out

** I'd dropped my mountain bike to our shop (I work for a cycling retailer) and drove there after work to collect it, just before the place closed. Got it and rode about a bit, and as I went to take the wheels off to fit into my car - it's a sedan so the boot is very low. I just could not get the front wheel off with the short multi-tool that I had - so little leverage to remove the wheel axle. I tried for ages and ages and the shop had closed in this time, so I had to ride my bike home, to grab another bike to come back to collect the car 🤣
It meant doing the first ride with no helmet/lights and also not having my cycling shoes that attach to the pedals - the pedals are very small and tricky to ride with normal shoes! Especially flat shoes without much grip
I wasn't impressed!

@AlHindOud - Oud Shah Alam

This is my first time swiping it and it's very interesting. It sort of reminds me of @RisingPhoenix ZTF, and if I sniff deeper there is a bit of a more normal clean Malaysian scent that smells to me like something that would come from @Habz786 or Agar Aura, but it's sort of hiding away behind more prevalent notes. Those types of oils have never been my thing, so I can't be much more specific, but I am thinking of mulia, sik, and Ghazal 2. Something that they have in common is also here.

I am very intrigued. I will have to spend more time with this oil to understand it.

I recently received a bottle of “the history of Indonesian oud“ from Russian Adam / ALD. This is an alcohol spray and according to Adam it was extracted with a hybrid CO2/alcohol process, done on a pretty large scale.

I think I have other oils extracted by the same process: jasmine tea and orange flower extracts from Robertet I believe. These are also alcohol/CO2 co-extractions at the end product is alcohol based.

The extraction seems to have been unusually effective, compared to other oud extracts I have smelled. The various CO2 oils I have sniffed all have a kind of shared, mellow dry woody vibe with one exception. This one smells to me like the process resulted in a more robust extraction. Smells unlike any other oud extract I have smelled and I would love to see some more oils extracted by this method, especially the cultivated kinam.

The jasmine tea extract made by this method is a real beauty.

Indo Oud is so good and it seems to get better after a few weeks.

EO Nha Trang LTD
IO Nha Trang Ultima

What Oud dreams are made of...
Was a bit inspired to wear these two sides by side after @Jame made that thorough post about several top Viet oils. There's no denying that Vietnamese oils are my absolute favorite oils, especially the likes of these. I'd also add Taha's of course. But just as @Jame said, as much as I love and appreciate Nha Trang LTD, at the end of the day I also don't think it's worth the asking price. Actually, from Ensar, I much prefer Guallam Kilam, an oil that not many people talk about, it's 1/3 the price of NHLTD, and to me, it smells better. It has a very unique profile compared to most Vietnamese oils that I've tried, especially from Nha Trang. Very dusty, vanillic with a strong antique wood aroma to it. It's such a delight. To me, Guallam Kilma and IO Nha Trang Ultima are the best Viet oils for the money. Of course, Guallam Kilam doesn't have the complexity of these high-end ones, it's less complicated but boy it delivers.

I love Guallam Kilam, and Royal Guallam is also a great oil. I would like to get more GK if I can find it.

I will say that to me, GK smells way different from the other viet oils mentioned here, which all have a certain something in common. I always loved Nha Trang LTD but it actually took a long time for me to fully appreciate Guallam Kilam. Now I love it but I have run out of it 🙁

NTLTD is arguably not worth the price, depending on how you look at it. I think it has a quality that I have not smelled in any other oil. I don't really know how to describe it though. For me I paid around $800 for a half gram when it was the smallest amount available, and now I am glad I got to experience it, but I probably will never buy more. If I was rich enough that the price didn't matter, then it would totally be worth the price.

I think Royal Guallam is better in some ways, not as good in other ways, and about as good overall. That one is half the price. If you are only going to buy one then I would absolutely tell you to get RG, but if you want to experience both then there is no way around paying the high price for NTLTD. I personally use them in different ways. If I want to smell like NT oil or smell it throughout the day, then I wear RG. If I am going to wear NTLTD then I will always sit down and sit still with it at my desk or something. It's not as casual for me. That is not only because of the price, but because of the smell itself. NTU is closer to RG for me in that way.
