Purple SQ (aka Oud SQ) - 90s Terengganu with the thick leathery resinous SQ style. I wasn't sure what to expect with this one, and I'd probably argue that at this point Purple now functions as a similar kind of oud trope to 'Kinamic', where it's an umbrella of different profiles, signifier of quality and loose but compelling hypebeast marketing term all in one.
I haven't tried Sulaym's SQ Purple Malay, but given how this is performing I would guess that these oils are in a similar ballpark AND that the ballpark is very enjoyable but not mindblowing. Smooth, rich, malted, unfermented (though it does have a tang in the opening that settles quickly), aged Malay. On this first wear, I'm not detecting smoke, florals, purple or any piercing incense notes (but I'm looking for them because of write-ups elsewhere). It's something that smells immediately familiar, in the sense that it's very calming and satisfying even though I don't think I have any oils in my cabinet that nail down this exact profile and make it redundant.
A good addition to any collection, but not something that people should be agonising over to search out at any cost.
