It's a different profile in the opening. Drydown was really enjoyable with a good longevity
So I've finally gotten to a point where I have enough sample bottles in my small collection that on a daily basis I get to try something "new" or something I at least don't remember what it smells like. It's great to have this kind of rotation. I'm not the kind of person who only likes one region or even a few regions - I like them all. Sometimes I don't necessarily LOVE or get pleasure from an oil - but I still enjoy a new aroma. It's something different that breaks up the monotony of the day. It's nice to be able to experience and guess what I am smelling. I've started to forbid myself from googling the actual oils description until after I post here in the Oud of the Day channel. That way my interpretation is in no way influenced by the listing itself.
For Ghaith - this is a perfect example of one where I thought I had the region right as cambodi (I didn't). Then I thought I had the notes right as bitter, green, vaporous - licorice/basil/etc. (I didn't). lol. So I think to myself regularly - maybe I'm just bad at this. Bad at really pinpointing what I'm smelling. Because with oud a lot of the time, you have the oud smell which can take on a ton of different shapes and sizes, but then you have the other notes - and those are the notes that are often less pronounced and hard to put your finger on. So Ghaith - I see has in the listing, lime, coconut, and malay notes - none of which I was able to pick up on.
It's a fun experiment though - try it yourself. Pick out an oil you can't remember it's region or profile description and post here what you think it smells like - then after, take a look and see if your interpretation aligns with the listing!
For today - I tried Super Hoi Ann from IO, kindly provided by Jay as a sample for education purposes (thanks Jay!). On this one I get Leather and Cherry notes the most - maybe a little yeasty? As it dries down, I get more incense and smoke. But also those organic dried fruit leathers they sell at trader joes - to me, that's what it reminds me of. Everyone described this as a heavy hitter - which I took as it being strong and powerful and really diffusive. To me, it's powerful but in aroma not in a vaporous everyone around you can smell it kind of way. It also doesn't change much for me from top to bottom. The closest EO oil I can think of that shares a similar profile is OE. SHA is in a different league in terms of olfaction - more complex, but it shares the same kind of cherry incense/vietnam profile. Like OE, but for adults - with more incense, and more refined. Now off to check out what IO wrote about it to see if my interpretation is even close to his
🙂?
