I enjoy reading about the $700 per quarter gram oud on the same level I enjoy browsing online ads for private jets. A variety of reactions come to mind, varies from reading with fascination to wanting to ditch the whole huge conspicuous consumption obsession and focus on less material pursuits.

like any hobby that attracts collectors, things get very interesting at the higher budget end of the spectrum. Another hobby I enjoy is target shooting with air rifles. It is crazy to see what people buy without a second thought and the huge collections of $2-3,000 airguns that people have accumulated. Likewise there’s a big churn at this end of people buying, selling, reviewing, swapping, etc..
It is so eerily similar that it makes me wonder if what this all is really about is the pursuit of perfection and agarwood itself is just a sideshow.

the problem you face it a bit i think you are little behind in a bubble and dont see what happen in this dirty oud world ,cuz is true is a full of tricks and shit game our day . What before was sold as 500$ for 2.5 or 3gr our day is easily 1k..and i meen easily for oils matter. First exemple comes to my mind is IO Kejalasan Kedah witch was less than 450 i think for 3gr, and oil like that are ATLEAST 2.5 3k now...if is market price or real value i dont care, but this is price . If people expect 50$ oil to be good that meens they still dont understand what agarwood offer ,and also they should try buy wood or oil direct from sources too what value have our day. Before if you can take a plane and go Indonesia (just exmple) and find in private land tree or hunter or distiler etc and take cheap material/oil ,yes was possiblle , but i please you try today same thing when even grandmother of any indonesian guy know people raved this agarwood tree ,and they know we do "bussines" in "west" they all rise price as crazy , and here we dont talk about real market and what happen in Japan/Taiwan/Hk/China/Koreea, you will be surprised to see some oils witch are in our market 200gr oil are 700 800$ in their market ! And this is just start ...you will see what happen in future , when Al Shareef explain about investement in oud people dont take it seriouslly ,and was for one single reason , not try to ofend anyone or act as expert but most of new oud lovers comes from niche or artisanal perfume as Areej lets say and they dont full understand agarwood, they smell ,not like sold in groups or forums with less price etc, and thats why market dont have real value in west. Most of new guys buy oud for its smell not for what it is and what it offers, some of oils you will get all the nuances and facets has to offer even after 40 50 trials, all envoirment ,mood ,temp, body temp, room temp etc etc matters..so how can i judge an oil just cuz i sniff one time. And one more thing , human body dont receive smell just from signal from your brain , we have olfactive receptors in all body not just noose, thats why some naturals act crazy for our feelings and we get in love with x natural material (not necesarly oud)..i will try to upload some scients about olfactive receptors in our body !
And as exemple the kyoroku i try today was 500$ for 2.5gr or similar few years back in 2018 ,the value i think have today is atleast 2k !
Sorry for my weak english hope you get me ! Regards

I’ve heard a great deal about oud and investments - thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’m not sure how your post relates to the thoughts that I was expressing, but what I’m saying is I think humans are drawn to the pursuit of perfection in whatever hobby they focus on. Trying to find the perfect oud, the perfect airgun barrel, the best single malt scotch, the rarest butterfly. Collectors engage in similar ways across hobbies. It is some kind of theme of human nature that crosses traditions.

It could be art, music, coffee, agar wood, air guns.

These all seem like different activities and they are, but they are strumming the same cords in our nervous systems.

100% you are right brother ,but i think this act same for every hobby arround ,the most you go in ,the most you spend etc and try to get best of best ...and indeed is marketing also
Personally i love oud is biggest hobby and nothing cant take me out ,i remember when i try my first kinam on ceramic ,everything was change from that day i swear ,same happen with cleaner ouds ,i been like wtf ive live in a lie all this years ...cuz i didnt know the real aroma has to offer up do that day ,but i fence same problem as most guys here maybe ,i wanna get all oils but wallet reminds me im not sheikh 🤣🤣🤣

This sounds like a good topic that deserves it’s own thread.
Maybe an expert in Human Psychology should chime in, or an expert in Spirituality.
For me, I like to keep things simple…..
I feel that we all have our own paths, or journeys if you will. I can explain the many reasons why I got into this and into that, but I won’t assume why other people do what they do, that’s their own path.
Each hobby and each passion consumed my interest in different ways, some have remained and some I do not revisit (been there, done that).
To look at it conversely, I don’t believe that there was a moment in my life that was not consumed by a certain interest.

This doesn’t surprise me in the least given your focus here. I have moved through some stages and cycle back to others - photography, painting, botany, mycology, target shooting, fpv drones, oud, perfume making, etc.

Some from my list: airplanes and jetplanes, diamonds, jewelry, perfumes, photography, target shooting and bullet reloading, boating, angling, drawing and painting, life, religions, tap dancing, keyboards and guitars, cooking, clothing design, computer programming, astronomy, biology, chemistry, math, meditation, cars, motorcycles, watches, sports cards, comics, action figures, carpentry, horology, puzzles and puzzle solving, magic tricks, comedy, board games, fancy woods, auto repair, hvac, oud and oudh and incense, poems, art, roller skating……
Okay, I’ll stop there🤣🤣

Today I’m wearing a 30 year old Malaysian oud from sultan Q’s stash that I received as a gift.
Old school oud that shows it’s beautiful quality from the woods used not the technical tweaks of modern oils.
Amazing drydown that hits deep in my oud needs 🔥

Some Silani Emerald, from my unreleased oils. A wonderful oil, distilled from some of the highest grade incense wood available for oils in 2017. Notes of florals, fruits and honey.

One of the drawbacks to being a vendor is having to part with so many oils, the new owners undoubtedly get enjoy to these oils as they age throughout the years and create new memories with them.

I hope @Select989 can chime in soon enough about this oil…

Just my two cents. There is no end to accumulation of material wealth, in this case, if i may be so bold, a greed for newer pricier oud oils.

How many of us collector's can claim to finish, scrape the bottom of every bottle of oud we have realistically in the next 30-50 years?

Looking at purchases as an investment is different. Then your addiction is money. Anything can substitute oud as a source of profits. This topic surely needs a dedicated thread!!

JS Royal Merauke. This outfiddles all the current Merauke oils currently in the offing. It is such perfect Japanese incense to my nose with a ton of complexity to rival any of the super premium (rare) medicinal Tibetan incense blends. In the cooler weather, it sings. High marks for Marius.

Old agarwood co2 from Liberty Natural. This is the “total” extract which is like a dark paste. It is much more mellow than oud distilled oil, sits closer to the skin. This is very oudy, but in a cool, dry way. It is much more like the smell of a box or bag of chips than it is like chips on the burner. I love this stuff, odd
though it is.

I love co2 as well, it is room temp wood on steroids. add a tiny dot on the heater you will love it even more!
