Oud Stories - Filipino Bicol

I know that getting one’s hands on quality Filipino oud can be difficult as wild tree harvesting is illegal and only cultivated harvesting is permitted. I can see some artisanal Leyte or Bicol Oud on offer is usually priced with a high premium.

I was expecting this oud to have a different scent profile from all the rest of the regions that are the usual suspects. But to me it smells like a really good Cambodi. It starts out with notes of green earth, and mud. Then ripe mango and peach scents begins to unravel. It’s soft, woody, leathery, very resinous, and smooth. It has slight floral qualities. Again, it’s like a top-shelf Cambodi to my nose. Perhaps another wear is in order to come to a solid conclusion. Very beautiful.

Sulaym - hainan sidr 2. Smells like sidr honey, molasses and caramel, aged earl grey with bergamot and cultivated kinam incense. Never smelled wild kinam.

Same review as last week with the addition of spicy notes; cloves and maybe cumin.

Promised I would do a full review as I thought it will go through development. It smelled the same hours later. If it did develop I didn't detect it. But I don't have to concentrate on smelling it. It is powerful - only applied about a third of a swipe.

Yeah, to my nose it doesn't go anywhere either. It carries through with the same notes all the way through. Honestly though, in this case, I don't feel that's a negative. With some oils, I tend to do multiple swipes throughout the day as it's that opening blast that I crave. It's not necessary to do this with Hainan Sidr 11 as it stays the same with fantastic longevity.

I feel same way. Went to their website yesterday to buy another bottle. I very rarely buy a second bottle of oud oil or attar.

It's a layering kind of day today. Spring is here with the promise of a brutal summer to look forward to. I'm combining Thai Ateeq - Yusa + Siam Riep - Ensar (this combination alone is incredible). Now I've added a little bit of Vintage Ruh Kus - Alhindoud. Just to cool things down a little. I'll be smashing that once the temperature really starts to climb.

Oudique Fili Mukashi

One of the few oud oils I’ve finished that I will truly miss. Surely this one qualifies as a legend?

Down to tiny traces now.

Coca-cola with a slice of lemon, hydrocarbons, sweet diesel. Really concentrated.

In retrospect, I can’t help thinking that this would have been a good candidate for dilution in alcohol. Anyone try that?

You could still put some in that bottle with the remainder and give it a good shake.

TOL - Crimson Koh

This is the best Koh Chang that I have. It opens slightly animalic, plasticy, and leathery with a deep blood 🩸 red color. Notes of bitter and sweet fruits ensues. What’s really great is this floral aroma accompanying the sweet notes. Really great stuff.

Faniliau - Brother Sami. Been smashing this one the last few days. I love creating associative or place memories with ouds. It can put real meaning behind things. Or also underline an experience by wearing a particular scent during an experience or location. Particularly if you do it a couple of times with the same oil. Those notes will forever be locked in your memories. I do this now for the second time wearing Faniliau and staying at my mother's property house/dog sitting while she's away. It's a 2 and a half acre semi bush block which I grew up on. I visit regularly but don't often stay for multiple nights in a row by myself. It grounds me and I like to smell good while doing it 😁

The last of the Kinana package...

Al Hind III
A whiff of fermentation off the dipstick but it quickly fades. A bit of a rubbery head note before transitioning into spices, wood, leather, and something blue down there at the bottom. As the site says, this is a solid Hindi oil for people who don't necessarily like Hindis so much because they get turned off by the funk. Trust the dry down, give it a little time, you'll be rewarded. I didn't get a lot of longevity off this, either because I didn't swipe enough or it just faded too quickly on my skin.

Today is a generous couple-drops' smudge of 'Midori Hijau' of 'The Oud Lab' - transporting me to a living-breathing Jungle on a gorgeous sunny day, giving off the happy feel of being immersed in those golden rays of light pouring playfully through the green patchy canopee of trees; and the earth is lively with vapours - a perfect 'Komorebi' (木漏れ日) Moment - a vision created by the enchanting scent, to appreciate Fleeting Beauty of Nature, captured so aptly in this truly wonderful oil - ample-rich yet bright, earthy-zesty 'jungle-floor' yet also vaporous; vegetative - in a full cycle of life - from deep roots to the sky-piercing pinnacles, musky-musty and humid-woody, ancient and yet fully alive, complex and abundantly nuanced, powerful yet elegant; voluminous - with three-dimentional depth, and immersive - captivating with its evocative scent.
N.B. A while ago I had left on this thread a much more detailed review of 'Midori Hijau', but today is just a shared reminder of its objective excellence as well as of a personal appeal to my subjective taste.
