Wearing Hainan 05’ this morning

Wow! One thing I’ve learned on this journey is that the moment I think I understand Oud or regions something clicks and I remember I don’t know a damn thing. It’s humbling when a tree’s medicine to fight off an infection can also help dissolve the constructs of ego and the ways someone like myself can get trapped in “expertism”

Hainan 05’ is a gem. Classic fermentation done right. It’s musky without being offensive. It’s pungent in all the right ways. The concentrated fumes pierce your brain. Rich herbal woods. Sweet spices.

I have had many such moments, it would help if I distilled oils first hand, then I could unlock the codes of knowledge about oud, otherwise, it’s a long route to understanding, where many years and many ouds give you little pieces of the puzzle.

Cultivated kinam oil (first fraction)
Its only a few days old but shows lots of upfront potential . Has a spiced mint drydown that’s green in feeling after a vanillc:cream punch opener that makes the mind swim, I’m doing the backstroke right now in the pool of oud😎

Hainan oud by Mellifluence - reminds me a bit of Imperial Fragrant Harbour by Imperial Oud, with that nutty vibe - wasn't too keen on that and sold it after having it for a few months, but I like this one. The nuttiness seems in its top notes, it's drying down a little now to something a little sweet with a backbone of fruits to it. Doesn't feel "oudy" as do the incense laden Malaysian ouds (for example), but I'm coming around to this one.

On the other arm is Rose de Malaisie by La Maison Khenata (@F4R1d0uX) which is rather pretty, actually nontypical Malaysian - not really green/black/incensey in character...very interesting. Sorta peppery, leans towards a Hindi a little - non-barn type, but not these new-age Hindis that have been popping up lately. argh this doesn't make sense, does it? 😛

Who makes the rose de malaisie?

I wore Rose de Malaisie (LMK) earlier too. On me it is quite incensy though. I paid for 2.5 gram but Farid sent me well over 3 grams in two separate vials! Hope he's doing well and be back here soon. I miss our conversations.
Hi I'm sorry I'm new to these abbreviations. What's LMK

I'm guessing the specific attar/oil you were talking about is no longer available. As I can't seem to find it on the sellers page.
my bad, edited the original post to reference the brand.
Nope, I bought it in June 2018! wow...have I been into oud for over 3 years already?!

yea, later at night in bed it started to change - I woke up 2hrs after falling asleep and was surprised that the oils were still going strongly - they usually rub off on my sheets. Both oils had changed a lot - but I was half asleep and can't recall how, but seemed to have done a complete 180deg turn on how they'd started!
Also the 2 attars I'd applied to my hands were going strong too - 7+hrs later!

A majestic oil. Majestic in restraint. Only saying so much but then returning to one’s scent memory repeatedly.
