Al Hashimi - Ibn Zaydun. Sweet Malaysian, very grass/woody. Has a sweetness I'd think more for Borneo as opposed to mainland Malaysia. I'm really liking this.
Not sure what's going on here as my sample bottle says Perak 2017, as does the product description, but the image on the site says Sarawak 2019 https://www.alhashimi.com/products/ibn-zaydun - @Al Hashimi ?

Royal Bengal Oud - Khao Kho 2018. This sample may be many years old, the oil has almost solidified - I had to roll the sample bottle in between my fingers for it to loosen and become fluid-like, and turn it upside down and 5 mins later, still barely any has trickled down the bottle! I gave up in the end and used a plastic toothpick instead of the applicator. Still hard to swipe - the oil didn't smear, just kinda dumped the whole load in one spot on my hand. Super thick.
Really nice aroma, very sweet, easy to like, nothing in the way of barn. Rather incensy too. Good oil! Nothing fruity in here

Yunnan 2016 @AlHindOud sampling, I've been curious about Chinese oud oils, uncommon as they are and lately there's been a few sightings, so lucky for me I got my nose on a little, thank you Mohammed!

I've been eagerly awaiting this one—Yunnan 2016, a rare Oud oil from China that's truly a luxurious gem. From the very first whiff, it greets you with radiant yellow florals, lush foliage, verdant herbal tones, and resinous woody undertones. A delicate touch of toasted almonds effortlessly blends with it's opulent, earthy essence. As the fragrance evolves, I noticed a captivating mix of bitter-sweet fruits, aromatic incense, and a subtle hint of brushed leather, enveloping you in a lingering, musky warmth. It's a scent that takes you on a captivating olfactory journey, with each layer seamlessly transitioning to the next, delivering a truly multi-dimensional experience. Not quite animalic nor modern, it possesses a remarkable depth that unfolds beautifully. Yes to a bottle!

Ok decided to go on an @RisingPhoenix adventure this eve, inspired by @Sproaty

Bija Hainan 99 is one of the best oils ever made-it’s a top 1-3 for sure… I don’t know how I was lucky enough to get 1/2 Tola of it… Playboy Sultan is probably the best Brunei oil ever made—it’s clearly different but similar to Borneo that it convinces me it’s a new gen gem, an awesome experience. Thai Blue Lotus Attar is probably the best Attar ever made…. JK Delapp is a great person who deserves more credit.

I’ve been to his Cabin and atelier. It’s a jaw dropping place-his stuff is THE REAL DEAL.

It’s that simple for tonight. This year I vow to support him more, and also to get something out to him (between us) I promised a long time ago…. I have bad friended him some and I feel bad about it… and it’s probably the 3 oils swiped making me a bit “nostalgaguilty” but I mean this. He deserves our support, admiration and attention. 🫡 friend! You’re a legend among us!
So far in my Oud journey Bija is the best Oud I have ever smelt.

Royal Sarawak - Jinkoh Store
Here we go again. Another Malay but still different. Its "traditional" oil and you smell it. Its dark deep resinous but far away from *you know what*.
Its a nice combination of a cola note with smokey incensy nuances.
I want to go on a holiday and wear this

Wait… What if I don’t know what?

My oud of the day is olefaktory’s prachin. This oil definitely has the roughness of a cultivated recently distilled oil, but it is really surprisingly nice on all levels. That “new oud” smell fades fast and what’s left is spicy and oudy and incensy and completely enjoyable.

Agarwood Assam: Panbari Reserve

It's aging so nicely, ultra smooth and developing a crystalized-molasses type sweetness to it now compared to when it was freshly distilled. The barn is refined and settled down to showcase a creamy-like buttery aspect to it. There's a vaporous musky element to this oud that was always there since the beginning, letting you know of its strength and the glory of Assamese wilderness.

EO Suriranka Senkoh Original release.
This oil has grown on me with each consecutive wear. At first, I didn't know how I felt about it. I was not too fond of the opening, but was fascinated with its evolution and complexity, and loved the heart and the base. The more I wore it the more I loved it and although I was looking to sell it I'll keep it for now. One of the most chameleonic and complex oils I've ever tried. Also, seeing how difficult it is to get your hands on even a freakin gram of pure Gyrinops Walla oils these days, especially good oils, and how prices went through the roof, motivates my decision furthermore.

Ajmal Saif al Hind - old stock

This is an interesting one, as it’s not a pure Oud oil, but it wears kinda like a pure Oud oil.

I bought a few bottles of this a few years back, as someone had asked me to design a replacement for it since the old batches were more enjoyable than the newer. Oddly enough, each of the old batches I got my hands on smelled distinctive. Probably a different base Oud oil used in each of them. Ended up smelling more like a series than a single product, which was more fun.

Has been beautiful weather here in Atlanta the last week. Unseasonably nice. The heat and humidity would normally have you peeling your cloths off down to the skin at this point.

Instead, there’s been no wind, low humidity, and temperatures in the 50s 60s and 70s, and it’s been glorious - and all I wanted was some thing to wear as carefree and lazy as the weather is feeling right now. And that about sums up the old batches of Ajmal Saif al Hind.

China Sayang - was not very impressed on first wearing a few days ago. Smelled thin, too much pine and musk, dry, nothing special.

But today, I went for a walk outside in the crisp morning air and this oil was SINGING! beautiful Chinese oil. Deeper, richer scent, more zesty and incense, much more enjoyable.

Take your ouds for a walk

How much old, respected JK?
That’s a good question. I’m not sure which exact years I have bottles of. Just that they are the old, original packaging from some of the original releases.

Saif al Hind was originally released in 2001. The batches I have are from no later than 2005. So presumably from somewhere between 2001 - 2005 guaging but the original packaging and the people I got them from, who said they had purchased them new near the time of release. Taken with a grain of sand … but the packaging matches the original boxes and packaging.

I’ve tried one of the newer bottles and they definitely aren’t quite the same as the older releases, which is to be expected. If nothing else - the older versions have aged nearly 2 decades on their own. Maybe the newer releases will smell similar in years to come.

White Tiger (RPP) with a tiny swipe of a 5% white ambergris tincture. Wasn’t sure how this experiment would turn out. I thought to do this because White Tiger is one of the “cleanest” and most linear ouds I own and I wanted to see if the ambergris could “boost” it a bit. I’m not entirely sure how I felt about the scent at first but as they both sat for a while they melded together into something really enjoyable. Not to mention, I put the oud on both arms but the ambergris only on one and it turns out the arm with the ambergris remained fragrant for longer and had greater projection. It turned out to be a good lesson in how exaltive fixatives work! Always a fan of the wonderful ouds from Rising Phoenix. JK has the best stuff I’ve come across yet.

Rising Phoenix: Jiribam Guf

Distilled in 2006, this is a Hindi oud with notes of bitter dark chocolate, smooth barn, and has those dark Hindi characters (dark berries, spicy, bitter-sweet). Shares similarities to Krishnai Char which is a fantastic Hindi also from Rising Phoenix.

KC is like my favorite, are they dissimilar enough to have both?
